The Tale of the Shepherd Boy

Deep within the enchanting rolling hills, dwelt a boy named Shepherd. His being was essentially pure, and unsophisticated. His primary duty was mainly to care for his flock of ewes.
Their gentle baas and the whispering of the breezes through the lone tree on the peak were his only companions. Day in day, watching over his charges imbued in him a notion of tranquil contentment.
However, there here were the occasional moments of solitude, when the shepherd boy would pine for companionship. In one such instance out of sheer tedium, the shepherd boy orchestrated a naughty plot.
Stories of wild beasts prowling on sheep had long been circulating in the village. So, the boy chose to exploit this fear and played a trick on the villagers.
One morning he dashed into the village screaming “Wolf! A wolf is preying on my sheep!” The terrified villagers rushed up the hills to offer assistance but saw no beast.
The boy giggled at the dilemma on their faces. This game laughed for a few more days. But, one morning, a real wolf actually charge at the herd. The shepherd boy raced for help, shouting “Wolf, Wolf!” But this time, no one responded.
Frustrated and alone, the boy fought against the wolf but managed to rescue only few of his sheep. Heartbroken, he went back to the village only to be met with a scolding on honesty and the results of crying wolf.
The story of this shepherd boy has been transmitted generations as a mediaeval parable to teaching the significance of honesty, the implications of dishonesty and the dangers of crying wolf. Moreover, it highlights how trust once lost, is hard to earn back. It's a story as pertinent today as it was anciently.
